Iran and Iraq Hold Joint Meeting to Coordinate Pilgrim Transit via the New Border Gates at Zurbatiyah and Mehran

With construction underway on a new border inside Iraq, Iranian and Iraqi officials convened a joint meeting at the Zurbatiyah crossing, underscoring the need to accelerate bilateral infrastructure development and ensure full coordination in implementing projects related to Iran’s Mehran Border.

During the session, participants reviewed the latest progress on border‑area construction, the site selection of new gates, and mechanisms for synergy in advancing Iraq’s new border project. Both sides reiterated that all measures must proceed in line with prior agreements.

The Director‑General of the Transit and International Transport Department extended congratulations on the readiness of the new Zurbatiyah border on the Iraqi side, as well as the operational status of the Mehran BCP—Iran’s largest and busiest passenger crossing. He expressed hope that once Iraq’s new border is launched, pilgrims will benefit from smoother and more comfortable passage.

The meeting was attended by Javad Hedayati, Director‑General of Transit and International Transport at Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization; Atif, Director of the Zurbatiyah crossing in Iraq; the Deputy Governor for Development of Ilam Province; representatives of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Baghdad; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provincial representative in Ilam; the Provincial Road Maintenance and Transportation Director‑General; and a group of Iranian and Iraqi authorities.
