West Azerbaijan's Director General of Road Maintenance and Transportation has announced the full readiness of routes leading to the Tamarchin border following the implementation of 11 construction and safety projects designed to accommodate Arbaeen pilgrims. According to Mr. Shokri, significant infrastructure upgrades, road security measures and enhancements to the Tamarchin border have been completed ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Mr. Shokri also detailed the progress made, highlighting the completion of patching and asphalt resurfacing on the 105-kilometer stretch between Urmia and the Tamarchin border. Additionally, the installation of longitudinal lighting along a 10-kilometer segment of the Piranshahr-Tamarchin route, as well as the overhaul of lighting systems on 40 kilometers of roads leading to Tamarchin, has been finalized.
To improve safety and traffic management, 150 kilometers of road signage have been installed, 2,000 kilometers of road markings completed, and New-Jersey barriers erected along 115 kilometers of black-spot areas. Arsalan Shokri also confirmed that all black-spot areas identified and approved for improvement, declated in 2022, have been fully addressed, and roundabouts on the Urmia-Mahabad, Urmia-Sero and Urmia-Salmas routes have been completed.
In addition to road upgrades, 36 level crossings along routes to Tamarchin have been secured. The Tamarchin border itself has undergone extensive renovations, including paving, the refurbishment of passenger and commercial halls, gate organization and the installation of updated cooling and heating systems. These measures ensure the terminal is fully equipped to handle the influx of pilgrims during the Arbaeen season.
Mr. Shokri reiterated that these efforts reflect the administration’s commitment to enhancing safety, efficiency and the overall experience for pilgrims traveling through the Tamarchin route.
