Metrolinx and the Ontario Government have begun their search for design partners to both design and build the five new stations making up the Yonge North Subway Extension.

The project aims to bring TTC Line 1 subway service eight kilometres further north from Finch Station into the York Region, construction new stations in Toronto, Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill in the process.

A new request for qualifications (RFQ) has been issues for the stations, rail and systems contract which covers detailed design and construction of the extension’s five new stations, as well as the installation of tracks, signals and support systems.

The package also includes the construction of emergency exit buildings and a train storage facility alongside utility relocation work and modifications at Finch Station, which will see the extension connected to the existing TTC subway service Line 1.

Interested parties are now able to respond to the RFQ by submitting qualification and expertise portfolio, with Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario set to review all submissions before creating a shortlist of qualified candidates. These candidates will then be invited to submit full bids through a request for proposals.

The RFQ itself is posted on MERX as part of Infrastructure Ontario’s standard procurement process.

Metrolinx has also shared new conceptual designs of the stations, which will serve as a starting point for future project partners.

Three of the new stations, Steeles, Clark, and Royal Orchard, will be built underground, with Bridge and High Tech stations both set to be constructed at surface level.

Each station will feature modern layouts that prioritise safety and accessibility with wide concourses, escalators and elevators. The stations will also provide connection access with buses, GO trains, cycling and pedestrian routes.

Both major contracts have now been awarded to deliver the Yonge North Subway Extension, with work now underway to prepare for the excavation of the launch shaft.
