New Train Service Connects Leipzig and Southern Poland

History has been made as Leipzig and southern Poland have been directly connected by rail for the first time.

A new Eurocity (EC) train service offered by Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Polish PKP Intercity (PKP IC) connects Leipzig–Wrocław–Krakow with two EC trains per day in each direction.

The new timetable is already in effect, offering those in and around the economic and cultural centres of southern Poland, as well as the Polish-Ukrainian border city of Przemyśl, their first fast connection both to and from Germany.

Stops along the route also include Riesa, Hoyerswerda, Elsterwerda and Ruhland.

Janusz Malinowski, CEO of PKP Intercity, said:

The number of passengers traveling to Germany on our trains is increasing year by year, which is why we are expanding our international services westward. In addition to more frequent daily trains to Berlin, we are also creating new connections to other German cities.

We are pleased to be able to offer our passengers the option of traveling as far as Leipzig.

With the introduction of the new route, long-distance EC train services between Germany and Poland have increased by 50%.

Michael Peterson, DB Board Member for Long-Distance Passenger Transport :

More and more people are traveling by train across national borders. We are responding to the increased demand for connections between Germany and our neighboring country Poland with a significant expansion of rail services.

The new direct connections to the economically strong regions of southern Poland and to the border with Ukraine are important politically, economically, and for tourism.

The route is served by new trains featuring modernised Eurocity carriages operated by PKP IC, with each unit offering a seating capacity of over 300 seats.

Tickets are available to or from Poland up to six months in advance, with seat reservations automatically included. Reservations are not required for the domestic, German leg of the journey.
