Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) is advancing construction on the Totana–Totana section of the Murcia–Almería High-Speed Line, a key part of the Mediterranean Corridor.

The works in this area, which cover almost 10 kilometres, require several associated activities, including the reconstruction of the RM-502 regional road.

The future high-speed rail platform will cross the RM-502, which currently passes over the existing railway. To accommodate the new alignment, the road is being rebuilt using one of the spans of the viaduct over the Rambla de los Arcos ravine.

Modifying the road layout involves removing the current embankment and introducing a temporary diversion while work takes place. The project also proposes restoring the Colada al Abrevadero de las Flotas de Arranca livestock trail by installing a structure over the RM-502 via an overpass.

The reconstruction covers approximately 795 metres of road. The design includes two 3.5-metre traffic lanes, 1.5-metre outer shoulders, 1.1-metre verges, and 2-metre-wide drainage ditches. Additional tasks include earthworks, connections to the existing alignment, paving, road markings and signage.

With agreement from the Region of Murcia’s Directorate General of Highways, the RM-502 between Totana and the El Saladar industrial estate will close to traffic from 15 December for an estimated two weeks.

The Murcia–Almería High-Speed Line represents a significant section of the Mediterranean Corridor and will establish the first direct rail connection between the two provincial capitals. The project involves an investment of 3.6 billion EUR.

Adif AV recently awarded the contract for track installation between Vera and Almería and has launched the tender for electrification on the same stretch. Meanwhile, platform construction continues along the route and project design for the Pulpí–Águilas link is progressing.

Additional work includes electrification of the Murcia–Lorca line and the tendering of the Lorca–Almería electrification. Contracts for other systems, such as telecommunications and signalling, have already been issued.

The works form part of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and receives support from the European Union through the NextGenerationEU programme.
