CrossCountry has officially unveiled the first train of its newly refurbished Voyager fleet – marking the beginning of a 75 million GBP investment that seeks to provide enhanced passenger experiences across Britain.

The train was revealed at Alstom’s Litchurch Lane works in Derby, where CrossCountry colleagues and guests were given the opportunity to tour the train and experience its new enhancements first-hand.

Maintained, serviced and overhauled at Alstom’s Central Rivers depot; the Voyager Fleet refurbishment has been carried out at the company’s Litchurch Lane facility by around 130 staff.

The first train to be refurbished; the 220033 has accumulated 5,811,605 miles of travel since its initial introduction into service – a distance roughly equivalent to over 12 trips to the moon and back.

Meanwhile, CrossCountry’s Class 170 Turbostar fleet is also undergoing its own refresh programme, with seven units now in service on routes running between Birmingham, Leicester and Stansted Airport, and between Cardiff, Birmingham and Nottingham.

Over the course of the next two years, all 70 trains in CrossCountry’s long-distance fleet will receive upgraded tables at all seats, new seating with increased legroom, expanded under-seat storage and integrated power sockets, new carpets, refreshed interior and exterior artwork, refurbished toilets and vestibules, new onboard CCTV provisions and automatic passenger counters.

CrossCountry’s Managing Director, Shiona Rolfe, said:

This train marks an important step in our commitment to improving the experience for everyone who travels with us. The Voyager fleet has served passengers well for more than two decades, and these upgrades will ensure it continues to meet modern expectations for comfort, sustainability and security.

We’re proud to be investing in the future of long-distance rail travel and look forward to welcoming passengers on board our refreshed trains.
