Alstom has celebrated the completion of Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project as it officially opens for service.
The company was responsible for the design and delivery of the line’s CBTC system – the first of its kind in Australia.
Alstom’s Urbalis Flo CBTC system is expected to increase passenger trips across the metro, as well as reduce headway between trains, enabling more services more often.
The project itself represents the largest transformation of Melbourne’s railway since the opening of the City Loop over 40 years ago, and doubles the size of the city’s underground rail network.
Pascal Dupond, Managing Director of Alstom Australia and New Zealand, said:
The system that we have installed is bespoke for Melbourne’s rail network operating in a brownfield environment which is an Australian first.
If ever an Australian signalling project stood for the coming together of global expertise with local network knowledge, the Metro Tunnel Project is it.
We are proud of the role that we have played on a truly city shaping project.
Prior to its official opening; Alstom carried out over 4,000 hours of dynamic testing along all 70,000 kilometres of the network. The design and delivery of the CBTC system was completed by Alstom teams from Australia, Thailand, USA, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Poland, UK, India, Canada and Spain.
