Alstom has signed a framework agreement with PKP Intercity for the delivery of 42 Coradia Max double-deck electric multiple units (EMUs), as well as 30 years of full-service maintenance.

The contract, worth 6.9 billion PLN, also includes an option for the purchase of an additional 30 trains.

Production of the new units will take place at Alstom’s Chorzów site, with associated bogies set to be manufactured at the company’s Nadarzyn site, near Warsaw.

Beata Rusinowicz, Managing Director of Alstom in Poland, said:

We are proud that PKP Intercity has chosen double-deck trains manufactured in Poland, and that these modern trains will be built at our site, setting new standards for regional and intercity travel in Poland for decades to come.

This order marks a return to our roots in Chorzów, producing rolling stock for the Polish market.

For decades, thousands of trams built here have served Polish cities, and our factory also produced carriages for the Warsaw metro. Our entire team is proud and excited to take on this challenge for PKP Intercity and for Polish passengers.

Capable of travelling at speeds of up to 200 km/h; the Coradia Max fleet will consist of a set of six-car trains, combining four double-deck end cars and two single-deck intermediate cars, offering a passenger capacity of over 550 seats.

The train’s modular design will allow for PKP Intercity to tailor each unit to fit specific route and passenger needs, with each train fitted with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, reading lights, bicycle and stroller areas, wide automatic doors and family compartments.

As well as the units themselves; the contract will also see Alstom provide all preventative, corrective and overhaul maintenance activities across the entire fleet. The agreement also covers cleaning services, with support set to be covered by Alstom’s Fleet Support Centre and HealthHub digital platform.

The new, dual-voltage trains will offer step-free boarding from 760mm platforms, and automatic lifts for other heights.

Janusz Malinowski, CEO of PKP Intercity, said:

The InterCity double-deck trains will be a new quality on Polish tracks – fast, spacious, modern, and comfortable, while still available in the economy category. Passengers from cities such as Warsaw, Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok, and Terespol will be able to travel on them.

We want the first passengers to be able to board the new trains in about three and a half years.

The order builds on a long-standing partnership between Alstom and PKP Intercity, with Alstom having already delivered 20 Pendolino high-speed trains to the operator over a decade prior.
