Siemens Mobility has presented a new regional train fleet for S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland (MDSB2025plus) at its Wegberg-Wildenrath Test Center.

The fleet comprises 75 Mireo trains, including the battery-powered Mireo Plus B. The trains are scheduled to enter service in December 2026, enhancing capacity and service quality across the Leipzig region.

The contract, awarded to Siemens Mobility in December 2023, is valued at around 500 million EUR and represents the largest order for the Mireo train platform to date.

The distribution of vehicles is as follows: Länderbahn (DLB) will receive 41 three-car Mireo trains, while DB Regio AG will receive 18 four-car Mireo trains and 16 two-car Mireo Plus B trains, which are designed for operation on non-electrified routes by ZVNL Schienenfahrzeug GmbH.

Thomas Graetz, Head of Regional Trains and Commuter Rail at Siemens Mobility said:

We are very pleased that, starting in December 2026, these state-of-the-art Mireo trains, including the innovative, battery-powered Mireo Plus B, will significantly strengthen mobility in this region. ZVNL, Länderbahn, and DB Regio will receive more capacity, flexibility, and maximum passenger comfort. The contract awarded in December 2023 for a total of 75 highly modern Mireo trains is the largest single order for this train model in Siemens Mobility's history. It underscores the strong market position of the Mireo platform, of which we have already successfully placed 23 fleets with a total of over 550 trains.

The new trains provide 100 seats in the two-car units, 150 seats in the three-car units, and 200 seats in the four-car units. They include multi-purpose areas, more space for bicycles, a 1st class section with leather seats, free Wi-Fi, a family area, and barrier-free access. Power outlets, USB ports, and future wireless charging at four-person tables are also available. A real-time passenger information system will display arrival and departure times as well as connection details. The trains also include high-frequency window technology from Siemens Mobility to improve mobile reception.

The Mireo trains are designed for faster boarding and alighting, with additional doors and more space, supporting timetable adherence. Energy efficiency is up to 25 percent higher compared with similar trains, while the vehicles are built with reliability and recyclability in mind.

The fleet deployment is managed by a consortium of regional transport authorities led by the Zweckverband für den Nahverkehrsraum Leipzig (ZVNL). Other partners include Nahverkehrsservice Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH (NASA GmbH), Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (ZVMS), Öffentlicher Personennahverkehr Vogtland (ZVV), and the Thuringian Ministry for Infrastructure and Agriculture (TMIL).

The new trains will cover 10.6 million train kilometres per year across the network.
