The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) Board has approved a request from its Rail Car Replacement Team to purchase up to six additional rail cars from Siemens Mobility.

The approval forms part of GCRTA’s contract with Siemens Mobility, with an option for up to 60 additional Model S200 rail cars. The new vehicles are intended to replace the Authority’s existing fleet of heavy and light rail trains.

  • A high-floor design with two-door heights, enabling access from both high- and low-level platforms and ensuring compatibility across all rail lines
  • An updated passenger information and infotainment system
  • A redesigned operator cab with dedicated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), a heated windscreen, and improved visibility
  • Ice cutter pantographs on every car
  • Capacity for 52 seated passengers, four wheelchair spaces, and two bicycle racks

Cleaveland’s rail car replacement programme is budgeted at 450 million USD. This figure includes the purchase of the new vehicles, infrastructure modifications, rail connections, engineering, testing, training, field support, spare parts, and specialist tools.

Funding support for the project is provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA), and GCRTA itself.
