Speaking to IRNA in London on Monday, Rasouli noted that the IMO Assembly—its highest decision-making body—brings together senior maritime officials from member states for two weeks to discuss critical issues shaping the future of the maritime transport industry. He emphasized that Iran, as a country with a long maritime history and extensive port capacities, views active participation as essential for advancing national interests and reinforcing its role in global maritime policymaking.

Rasouli highlighted several core agenda items of this year’s Assembly, including the election of the IMO Council for the next two years, the approval of the organization’s six-year strategic guidelines, and its upcoming two-year action plan. He said these decisions will influence global standards on maritime safety, environmental regulations, technological development, and support mechanisms for developing countries.

He also pointed to the importance of deliberations on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions from international shipping, calling it one of the most pressing global challenges. Rasouli noted that regulatory decisions in this area carry significant implications for countries with active fleets and major port infrastructure, including Iran.

Budget deliberations, review of committee reports, and speeches by heads of delegations are also among the key components of the Assembly. Rasouli stated that Iran will use this opportunity to present its maritime capabilities, national priorities, and policy positions to the international community.

Emphasizing the diplomatic value of the gathering, Rasouli said that meetings with ministers and senior maritime officials from other countries on the sidelines of the Assembly will contribute to expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation. He described such engagements as vital for promoting Iran’s maritime capacities, attracting investment, and strengthening the country’s position within global transport and supply-chain corridors.

Rasouli concluded that Iran will participate with an active and constructive approach, aiming to safeguard national maritime interests and play a more influential role in shaping the future of global maritime governance.
