Zhong Xing 689 sank after the crewmembers noticed water ingress in the ship cabin. Upon seeing this, the 12 crew jumped into the sea, but they did not have time to enter on the lifeboat.

Local authorities deployed two patrol boats and two helicopters, while they coordinated nearby vessels to search for the crew. They also alerted ships in the area to avoid the incident site.

Eleven out of the 12 crew were rescued, but one is still missing and the search operation is ongoing.

According to sources, the vessel experienced strong winds, which led to navigational problems. As a result, the ship might have sustained damages because of travelling close to a rocky shoreline.
