Laing O’Rourke JV wins $191m Sydenham Station upgrade contract in Sydney

A joint venture (JV) comprising Laing O’Rourke and John Holland has secured an A$240m ($191m) contract to upgrade Sydenham Station in Sydney, Australia.

The contracted works are expected to enable Sydenham Station to operate under the city’s new metro system.

The JV is expected to carry out signalling works and utility relocations, as well as install new train control systems as part of the deal.

John Holland CEO Joe Barr said: “The Sydenham upgrade project will help support economic and social development in Sydney, and improve the ease with which people move around in their day-to-day lives.

“We have already been chosen to work with the government on the new harbour rail crossing for Sydney Metro City & Southwest.”

Holland noted that the project will employ more than 100 people, creating significant job opportunities on the southern fringe of Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD).

The project at Sydenham is expected to begin next year.

“This city-shaping project is a critical part of the transformation of the overall Sydney Metro project and the key meeting point of the new Sydney Metro and existing Sydney Trains networks.”

Additionally, Laing O’Rourke has received a contract in July to deliver the next phase of Metrolink expansion in Manchester, UK, as a part of the MPT consortium that also includes VolkerRail and Thales.

The 3.4mi Trafford Park line extension will separate from the existing Pomona stop and will comprise six stops at key destinations.

The Trafford Park project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
