Samsung Heavy Industry reveals new safety plan

On August 4th, Korean Samsung Heavy Industries(SHI) announced the launch of Safety Master Plan, a new plan aiming to enhance safety, after the fatal crane collapse in May.

The Plan involves pioneering initiatives and detailed roadmap to establish Geoje shipyard as the world’s safest shipyard by 2018, the company informed.

SHI revealed earlier that safety will be the foremost value in its management, and will execute the plan as accordingly.

The scope of the plan includes setting up of a committee on safety management and upgrade of the original safety team into an independent division, with the aim to enhance its authority. 

Furthermore, a system to prevent crane collapses is under development, by monitoring their positions in real-time.

Other measures include installing of cameras in over 100 cranes.

The accident in May caused death of 6 and injury of another 25 people. Following the incident, South Korean police raided several offices of the company, in order to conduct controls on safety measures.
