Over 4.29 Million Pilgrims and Travelers Cross Mehran Border in Five Months

The Director General of the Road Maintenance and Transport Department of Ilam Province, Heidar Dashti-Pour, announced that more than 4,290,946 pilgrims and travelers have crossed through the Mehran border since the beginning of the current Iranian year through the end of the fifth month.

Dashti-Pour stated that the Mehran border, as one of the principal land gateways between Iran and Iraq, has witnessed the movement of millions of Iranian and foreign pilgrims and travelers during the first five months of the year.

He added that of the total recorded crossings, 3,713,828 were Iranian pilgrims and travelers, while 577,118 were foreign nationals.

Highlighting the surge in traffic during the Arbaeen pilgrimage season, the official noted that nearly three million crossings were registered at the Mehran border between July 16 and August 14 this year.

Dashti-Pour underscored the strategic importance of the Mehran crossing for pilgrim and passenger movement, stating: “The high measure of traffic at this border reflects Mehran’s significant role in border exchanges and pilgrimage travel to Iraq. The Ilam Province Road Maintenance and Transport Department has implemented the necessary planning, preparedness, and measures to facilitate transport and provide suitable services to pilgrims and travelers at this border.”
