Toronto’s latest rapid transit line, Line 6 Finch West, has officially begun service.
Toronto’s latest rapid transit line, Line 6 Finch West, has officially begun service.
Almost 11-kilometres in length; the new transit line links Humber College Station in the west to Finch West Station in the east.
The line consists of 18 stops and connects with TTC Line 1, GO Transit, MiWay, Zum, York Region Transit and Brampton Transit
Day-to-day operation of the line will be handled by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which will now be integrated as part Toronto’s broader transit system.
The new service is expected to serve over 51,000 each weekday across the corridor, with trains set to operate every six and a half minutes during rush hours.
Signalling technology along the line was provided by Hitachi Rail, who implemented the latest generation of its own, Toronto-developed SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control system for the first time.
Ziad Rizk, Managing Director, Hitachi Rail, said:
We have been developing cutting-edge rail technology out of Toronto for 50 years, now the choice for leading transit systems around the world.
Our first SelTrac™ deployment was on Scarborough’s Line 3 in 1985, and now 40 years later, Line 6 Finch West is entering service with our made-in-Canada technology. We look forward to Toronto transit users experiencing the benefits of our technology with faster, more reliable, more frequent, and more comfortable journeys. I congratulate everyone involved for reaching this milestone.
Line 6 Finch West is the city’s first modern light rail transit (LRT) line, and is expected to carry more than 12 million people per year by 2031.
