CRRC Produces EMUs and Electric Locomotives for Malaysia

CRRC Dalian has announced that its electric multiple units (EMUs) and electric locomotives built for Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project were officially completed on 18 November.

The units mark a key component of the long-distance rail scheme, which aims to improve connectivity across Malaysia’s east and west coasts.

The trains have been developed with an emphasis on intelligent operation, dependable performance and reduced vehicle mass. Each EMU incorporates a network control system with dual-redundancy protection, designed to maintain continuous oversight of the traction, high-voltage and auxiliary systems. This arrangement allows for real-time monitoring and supports millisecond-level fault diagnostics, helping operators respond promptly to potential issues.

Engineers have made structural adjustments to the train body to reduce weight, contributing to lower energy consumption during service and supporting more efficient operations.

Externally, the EMUs feature a blue-and-white colour scheme with ocean-wave motifs. The graphics also include design elements referencing Malaysian flora and fauna, offering a visual link to the regions the trains will serve.

The locomotives and EMUs will undergo further testing and commissioning before being shipped to Malaysia, where they will form a core part of the rolling stock for the ECRL once the line enters service.
