Stadler has unveiled its latest electric FLIRT train at the TRAKO International Railway Fair in Poland.
The new trains, which have been designed for the Valle d’Aosta region in Italy, are set to join the fleet of existing FLIRT Valle d’Aosta trains, which are considered ‘ambassadors for the region’.
Valle d’Aosta has ordered an additional six electric FLIRT trains, which have been financed in part by the EU Recovery Fund.
Collaborations between Valle d’Aosta and Stadler first began in 2015 with the purchase of five bimodal FLIRT vehicles, the first of their kind approved to operate within Italy and the manufacturer’s first bimodal vehicles.
The trains then subsequently entered service in 2019 on the Aosta–Turin line.
The vehicles have been designed to mirror bimodal units to aid recognition and offer a greater capacity than the current fleet, increasing seating from 175 to 236 and offering standing room for over 200 passengers.
Maurizio Oberti, Stadler Sales Director for Italy, said:
This project is a key milestone in the development of mobility in the Aosta Valley. Stadler and Valle d’Aosta share a common vision of sustainable, modern, and passenger-focused transport. With FLIRT, we are providing a future-proof solution that will continue to serve the region for years to come. We are proud to support our client on their journey towards sustainable and passenger-oriented transport.
Supplied in four-car formation; the new Valle d’Aosta 3kV electric electric multiple unit (EMU) FLIRT trains were designed and built in two years, and feature aluminium car bodies with a reduced axle load, as well as four wide low-floor doors on each side.
Additional passenger amenities include 230V and USB power outlets, air conditioning and a set of two restrooms.
Laura Obert, Public Transport Director for the Valle d’Aosta Region, said:
The new trains represent reliability, comfort, and accessibility, while supporting the region’s goals for sustainable mobility and tourism development.
They will operate on the Turin–Aosta line, where full electrification will be completed in 2026.
