Amtrak has released a first look at its new Airo train, which has been shipped from Siemens’ Sacramento facility.
The trainset is being delivered to Pueblo, CO, where it will complete testing before entering service on the Amtrak Cascades corridor in 2026.
This unit is the first of 83 new trains ordered to transform service on Amtrak’s network. Built by Siemens in California and funded through the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, these trains represent a major investment in the region’s passenger rail system.
Key upgrades include:
- Larger windows and more table seating, offering better views of the Pacific Northwest
- Improved passenger comfort, with ergonomic seating, cushioned headrests, large tray tables, water bottle holders, and seatback tablet stands
- Redesigned café car, featuring regional food and drink options, including beer, wine, and spirits, plus self-service items
- Lower emissions and greater fuel efficiency, supporting environmental goals
- Updated onboard features, such as power outlets, USB ports, free Wi-Fi, better lighting, digital displays, touchless restroom controls, and automated steps
These new trains are part of a larger initiative to transform Amtrak’s passenger rail services across the US. This includes introducing new Acela trains, completing major infrastructure projects, expanding services, upgrading stations, and renewing tracks.
