Korean Air has announced an agreement with Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC) that sets the stage for the construction of a new maintenance hangar at the airport.
The partnership agreement covers the development of the maintenance facility in IIAC’s High Tech Aviation Complex. Korean Air said the project is an important part of its efforts to expand its maintenance capabilities as it integrates with Asiana Airlines.
IIAC is supporting the project as the landowner through site preparation, while the construction cost of KRW176 billion ($120 million) will be funded by Korean Air, the airline told Aviation Daily.
The hangar will be built on a 69,299 m2 (227,000 ft.2) site, and it will be capable of accommodating two widebody aircraft and one narrowbody aircraft at the same time. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with operations targeted for late 2029.
About 300 personnel will be based at the facility, which will be a major center for heavy maintenance and aircraft modification work, airframe inspections and component checks.
Korean Air confirmed the new hangar will provide additional maintenance capacity and does not replace or consolidate any existing facilities.
Korean and Asiana already operate three hangars at Incheon with six bays in total, supporting line maintenance, heavy maintenance, and select component repairs. Korean Air also has maintenance hangars at Seoul Gimpo Airport and its MRO base in Busan.
In addition to the new hangar, Korean Air’s MRO infrastructure projects include a KRW578 billion initiative to build a major engine maintenance facility on Yeongjong Island in Incheon.
