HITACHI Rail Italy (HRI) signed an €87m contract on July 16 to supply 12 Leonardo trains for use on Line 2 of the Milan Metro, in addition to the 60 trains previously ordered by Milan Transport (ATM) through its 2012 framework agreement.

HRI says the new trains will be the same as those currently operating on lines 1 and 2, with full width gangways that allow passengers to see down the length of the train, air-conditioning, vandal-proof walls and CCTV.

Each 107m-long six-car train accommodates up to 1232 passengers, 204 of them seated, and has a maximum speed of 90km/h.

The 12 trains, which will be built at HRI’s plants in Reggio Calabria and Naples, are scheduled to be delivered in autumn 2019.
