Watching your wagons

TIN news: New York Air Brake and Lat-Lon have provided monitoring technology for 240 sulphur wagons supplied to Etihad Rail.

Eight wheelset sensors per wagon measure bearing temperature and the degree of tilt to warn of potential derailment.  The upper hatch is monitored for open/closed status by two more devices, and three sensors check the status of the bottom dump gates.

This data is sent wirelessly to a receiver logic unit developed by Lat-Lon, then routed through NYAB’s Smart Car Sensor Hub and into the electronically controlled pneumatic brake communications/power cable for transmission to the locomotive.

‘Etihad Rail is pushing the state-of-the-art in rail technology with this project’, according to Lat-Lon President & CEO, David Baker.
