The Škoda Group has unveiled a new, fully low-floor, five-section tram destined for operation in Bergamo, northern Italy.
A set of 10 of units, all of which will be equipped with an anti-collision system, will be delivered by the end of this year.
Based on Śkoda’s ForCity Classic platform; the manufacturer has adapted the units to suit the unique needs of Bergamo, including changes to allow for operation on local infrastructure such as urban and suburban sections, as well as operation in tunnels.
Each vehicle will offer a capacity of 281 passengers and be fitted with eight wide double doors along its length, ensuring rapid passenger exchange. All units will include a fully air conditioned interior and driver’s cab, modern LED lighting and dedicated spaces for people with reduced mobility.
Olesea Lachi, Vice President South & East Europe at Škoda Group, said:
Italy is a growing market for public transport, and the fact that Bergamo will be another city with Škoda trams is clear proof of the high level of Czech research and development. Production of all units is in full swing, and we are managing to keep to the set schedule. The first trams will appear in Italy as early as March.
The tram was designed by the Škoda Group in accordance with the strictest European standards and includes an anti-collision system that actively monitors the area in front of the tram and helps prevent accidents.
All vehicles will run on a newly built line leading from Bergamo station to the nearby village of Villa d’Almé and operate at speeds of up to 70 km/h.
