Denver International Airport Receives Final Alstom Train Car for Modernised Fleet

Denver International Airport (DEN) has received the final Innovia APM R train car in the modernisation of its Automated Guideway Transit System (AGTS) fleet.

The modernisation has been valued at 78.85 million USD, with the entire system and vehicle fleet seeing its first modernisation effort since its original construction in 1995.

In total, 26 cars have been delivered for use within the upgraded system, expanding fleet capacity in order to accommodate additional passengers.

DEN purchased 19 additional Innovia APM R cars in 2025, which are scheduled for delivery across 2027 and 2028. This second order will see the remaining 15 legacy vehicles in DEN’s fleet replaced and preparations made for planned capacity and resiliency upgrades in the coming years.

DEN CEO Phil Washington said:

DEN’s train to the concourses serves over 150,000 riders each day. As we continue to grow our operations, we are working diligently to ensure the airport can accommodate current and future passenger volume while maintaining these critical assets.

The first new Innovia APM R car was put into service in 2024, and 24 have been added into service since. In all, 45 new train cars will replace all 31 original cars, expanding the fleet and adding 14 additional cars by 2028. The increased capacity it expected to increase passenger capacity by approximately 1700 people per hour, as well as reduce overall waiting time between trains.

Manufactured by Alstom; the cars are made up of lightweight aluminium, assembled using recyclable materials and utilise more efficient power supplies.

While this delivery completes the base order of vehicles, Alstom is continuing its work to support DEN’s vision of creating a modern and efficient airport transportation network.

In addition to the replacement and upgrade of its fleet, DEN has also begun a comprehensive AGTS Revitalisation Programme, which will see the improvements made to aging infrastructure, including guideway switches, signaling software, and the train’s power distribution system. The revitalization program will also include expansion of the train’s maintenance facility to accommodate the expanded fleet and improve operational and maintenance efficiencies.
