In British Columbia, TransLink’s SkyTrain has commenced service at Capstan Station, serving customers in Richmond’s rapidly developing Capstan Village neighbourhood.
Positioned between Aberdeen and Bridgeport stations on the Canada Line, Capstan Station is designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community.
The station includes a range of customer-focused amenities, including:
- A larger platform waiting area
- An expanded street-level concourse
- Dual escalators for improved passenger flow
- All-digital displays providing enhanced travel information
- Future retail spaces to serve commuters and residents
The station also features an art installation by local artist Howie Tsui. The large mosaic, made from more than 3,500 custom-made tiles, celebrates the aquatic life of the Fraser River estuary.
Capstan Station was developed through a unique funding partnership involving TransLink, the City of Richmond, and local property developers, including Concord Pacific, Polygon Homes, Pinnacle International, and Yuanheng. Over half of the 62 million CAD project cost was covered by developer contributions.
“The Capstan Station is an example of how the City of Richmond, through an innovative first-of-its-kind-in-Canada funding collaboration with developers, can deliver much-needed community amenities without direct costs to local taxpayers. The station will bring sustainable transportation closer to thousands of residents and support this vibrant, growing neighbourhood for decades to come.”
The new station is the second to be added to an existing SkyTrain line, following the opening of Lake City Way Station on the Millennium Line in 2003.
It is expected to serve the approximately 30,000 weekday riders of the Richmond–Brighouse branch of the Canada Line, while encouraging sustainable transit use in a neighbourhood designed to support high-density residential and commercial growth.
“This brand-new station, located in the heart of a bustling community, will enable current and future residents of Capstan Village to make transit their number one transportation choice. This project underscores how fast, frequent, and accessible transit connects our region and strengthens our cities.”
