Australia Newcastle port’s coal throughput unaffected by new shiploaders: PWCS

TIN news:    Coal throughput at the key Port Waratah Coal Services terminals at Australia’s Newcastle port will not be impacted by the installation of two new shiploaders that were delivered over the weekend, PWCS general manager of development Terry Tynan told S&P Global Platts Tuesday.
“The impact to throughput is absolutely minimal,” he said.
“Over 12 months ago we worked with the whole coal chain to ensure we wouldn’t see any reduction in tonnes,” he said.
The commissioning and integration of the two new shiploaders at Carrington terminal, which will replace three older ones, will take about five months and normal operations were expected to resume by year end, PWCS said.
The terminal began a 10-day outage two days ago as part of the operation but rescheduling of other equipment will ensure throughput will be unaffected, Tynan said.
“We’ll change the way we load, we’ll use more capacity at the Kooragang terminal, we run other equipment harder,” he said, adding: “The challenge for us is we need to continue to meet our schedule.”
The three shiploaders being replaced at the Carrington terminal are nearing the end of their lifespan after loading more than 300 million mt of coal over the past 40 years, PWCS said.
The new shiploaders will not add additional throughput capacity to the port, Tynan said.
The two PWCS terminals at Newcastle port have a combined coal shipment capacity of 140 million mt/year, Platts reported earlier.
