TIN news:   Holt Logistics Corp. and Greenwich Terminals LLC’s purchase of two new Super Post-Panamax container cranes should help operations at the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal and the Port of Philadelphia, according to a news release.
The container cranes are expected to be operational by late 2017 at the south Philadelphia terminal, according to the release from the Gloucester City, N.J.-based Holt, the terminal’s logistics provider.
The Super Post-Panamax classification denotes cranes that are able to handle vessels of approximately 22 or more containers wide.
The cranes are the latest in a series of improvements to modernize the terminal facilities.
Recent investments include a multi-million dollar entrance/exit gate improvement project, technology infrastructure improvements and purchases of new reach stackers and reefer plugs for increased efficiency.
Holt Logistics and the terminal are exploring a project designed to increase terminal capacity with plans for additional capital expenditures totaling more than $100 million, according to the release.
Together with the completion of the Delaware River deepening project, the cranes’ purchase will position the Port of Philadelphia and the terminal as a destination for shippers in the Post-Panamax global economy, port authority officials said in the release.
“These cranes will give Packer Avenue the ability to service the largest ships in the world,” Thomas Holt Jr., president of Astro Holdings LLC, the terminal’s lease-holder, said in the release. “With the recent opening of the Panama Canal expansion, we are excited to continue investing in our port facilities to accommodate the expected increase in volume for many East Coast ports.
“We are also thankful for the continued public-private partnership with the Commonwealth and Philadelphia Regional Port Authority that has helped to drive growth at our facilities, and look forward to a productive relationship for years to come,” Holt said in the release.
