TIN news:   San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in California, US, has commenced the $2.4bn renovation work of Terminal One, the airport's oldest passenger facility.
The project will create an interim Boarding Area B with nine fully-operations gates, thereby serving continued passenger activity while a complete redevelopment of the Terminal One takes place.
Renovation works at the airport will be completed in phases from 2016 to 2024.
They will see the demolition of the original South Terminal's existing facilities, opened in 1963, as well as the reconstruction of a new Terminal One Centre and a boarding area.
"The renovation of Terminal One is another milestone in our city's effort to keep SFO a world-class airport."
Once completed, the Boarding Area B will have a total of 24 gates, six of which will serve international arrivals by providing direct access to the US Customs and Border Protections Federal Inspection Area.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said: "The renovation of Terminal One is another milestone in our city's effort to keep SFO a world-class airport, and on this day we also celebrate another milestone for SFO in Airport Director John L. Martin's final public appearance before his retirement.
"For more than 20 years, John's leadership has transformed SFO into a world-class airport, reflecting all that is great about the San Francisco Bay Area.
"The renovation of Terminal One is a perfect retirement gift, and the completed facility will serve as a tribute to his visionary leadership."
The project will also include the development of a new centralised security checkpoint, a new baggage handling system, dining and retail concessions, and connecting walkways.
The walkways will offer smooth passenger access from security to international boarding areas A and C.
