JNPT asks importers to opt for its DPD facility

TIN news:   Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the biggest container port of India, has urged importersto avail its Direct Port Delivery (DPD) facility to help save logistics cost by up to Rs 30,000 per container.
“We urge the industry to make use of this facility which has been introduced by us recently for their benefit,” said Neeraj Bansal, Vice Chairman, JNPT. “This will be a game changer in reducing logistics cost by Rs.20,000 to Rs 30,000 per box (container).”
Business ease
This facility has been introduced by the port as part of its policy of ease of doing business. It is made available for all importers who are registered in the Accredited Client Programme (ACP) of the Customs department.
Through this scheme, containers are directly delivered by all operators running terminals at the port to the consignees (importers) in less than two days as against nine to 11 days during the normalcourse. Such importers need not have to wait for many days to take delivery of their containers pushed into one of the many Container Freight Stations (CFSs) located at the port area.
The CFS model is costly as it needs a number of loading and unloading of the containers before it is handed over to the importer.
“Earlier we had a requirement of at least 300 containers per month to enable a consignee to get direct delivery. But we have done away with that. Today we are even allowing delivery of a single container provided the importer is registered with Customs,” Mr. Bansal said.
