Government opts for flexible method for mandatory weighing

TIN news:  Transport and Logistics Netherlands (TLN), freight forwarders association FENEX, shippers’ organisation EVO and export association Fenedex are pleased that the government takes the flow of containers in the Netherlands into account in the introduction of the international container weighing requirement. According to the organisations, this is good news for Dutch businesses.
As of 1 July, shippers and freight forwarders are required to verify the weight of a container before the container is loaded onto a ship. Last Friday, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment published the Dutch interpretation of the international regulations. Partly on the advice of TLN, FENEX, EVO and Fenedex, the Dutch government has opted for a flexible method; a scheme which allows companies that want to make use of a certified calculation method to follow a simple procedure.

This means that any company that follows this procedure may automatically use the so-called method 2. In other words, they do not need to have separate certifications, such as AEO or ISO certifications, or meet other additional requirements. Other European countries take a less pragmatic approach to this, according to the organisations.
