TIN news:   Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta, Georgia, US, has commenced work on ATLNext, the airport's $6bn capital improvement plan.
Under the 20-year plan, ATL will upgrade its terminal, replace parking facilities, expand cargo operations and concourses, as well as plan for a hotel and mixed-use development project.
One of the first projects in the plan includes a six-week schedule to modernise the West Crossover, the escalator corridor connecting the airport's Plane Train automated people mover system with the baggage claim areas.
"The ATLNext modernisation project will prepare our airport for the future."
A video screen will also be installed to replace the 'Spirit of Atlanta', a 70ft-wide mural of children playing at Centennial Olympic Park, to provide information to passengers moving up the escalator.
The mural will still be displayed digitally on the video screen.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport general manager Roosevelt Council Jr. said: "The ATLNext modernisation project will prepare our airport for the future.
"We'll honour our past by ensuring the Spirit of Atlanta remains, in some form, to welcome our guests for years to come."
The construction project initially involves building and positioning scaffolding.
During the construction, passengers will exit the Plane Train at Concourse T and move to the baggage claim area along a revised route.
