Additional K-9 teams will also be deployed to screen passengers at checkpoints.
Under a partnership with the airlines, the DHS is working to reduce the size and amount of carry-on luggage.
Both agencies are enhancing research development and technology investment to improve passenger flow and aviation security, Johnson added.
The TSA is authorising federal security directors to provide additional staff for screening at passenger checkpoints.
Travellers can enrol in the TSA Pre programme, which will speed-up the security screening process.
Eligible passengers will be given a known traveller number (KTN) to use when making flight reservations.
Participating airlines will print an indicator on the passengers boarding pass.
