Netherlands NS selects CAF to supply new Sprinter electric trains
TIN news: Dutch passenger railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) has selected Spanish train manufacturer CAF as the preferred bidder to supply its new-generation Sprinter electric multiple-unit fleet.
Under this contract, CAF will provide 120 passenger trains for NS's Sprinter service at an approximate cost of €510m and the contract will also include options for additional trains.
The contract procedures are expected to be completed by December.

The new train sets belong to the CAF's Civity family and can be installed with the ERTMS train protection system.
Since the current Sprinter Light Train fleet has a lack of toilets, the new sets will be equipped with wheelchair-accessible facilities.
By the end of this year, NS will also shortlist potential suppliers for its Intercity New Generation (ICNG) trains.
The acquisition of ICNG trains come under the NS's Programma Hoogfrequent Spoor (PHS), which aims to provide trains for every 10min on main routes.
Railway Gazette reported that the new intercity trains will run between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Netherlands, and the service is expected to start in 2021.
NS will be able to run 50% its trains on the country's electrified network from next year onwards, while it aims to provide wind power for its entire network by 2018.
