Chicago Transit Authority to advance $۲.۳bn Red Line Extension project
|
TIN news:   The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) in the US is set to publish a draft environmental impact study (EIS) to obtain federal funding to advance the $2.3bn Red Line Extension (RLE) Project.
The project involves a 5.3-mile extension for the Red Line rail service to stretch from 130th Street to 95th Street, as well as the building of four new rail stations. These new stops are intended for near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street.
The EIS gives detail on potential benefits and impacts of both proposed options for the project.
"We continue to make significant investment in the South Side."
Later on, the CTA will seek public comments as part of the federal Draft EIS between 6 October and 30 November, using feedback to assist with future planning decisions.
The authority has not yet acquired properties for the Red Line Extension Project as a final alignment has not been selected so far, nor has federal funding been secured.
RLE is a vital part of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s and CTA’s 'Red Ahead' investment plan, and is expected to create 29,000 new jobs.
Other projects improving Red Line on the South Side include the $425m reconstruction of Red Line South in 2013, as well as the $280m ongoing construction of a new 95th Street Terminal due for completion in 2018.
CTA president Dorval Carter Jr said: “We are pleased to make progress on this transformational Red Line Project, which will expand transit for the Far South Side and create faster access to jobs, education and opportunity.
“As we move forward in the comprehensive federally required planning process for this project, we continue to make significant investment in the South Side that include the new 95th Terminal, improved Red and Green Line service and expanded bus service on multiple routes to better serve our customers.”
