TIN news:  Gauteng Province authority in South Africa has started 21km road rehabilitation project on the N14 freeway between Diepsloot and Brakfontein interchange in Centurion, Tshwane.

The project has been started by transport authorities after completing the first phase of rehabilitation works between Krugersdorp and Diepsloot region.

The second phase of the ZAR444m ($32.7m) project will see completion of the remaining portion that stretches between Diepsloot in Johannesburg and Centurion over the next two years.

Project works in this phase includes construction of a new fast lane, reconstruction of sub-base, removal of existing defective asphalt, painting new road markings, repairing existing bridges and installation of new guardrails.

Gauteng Roads and Transport Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) Ismail Vadi said: "With traffic volumes on the N14 growing at a rate of 3.2 % per annum, the freeway has seen sharp increases in traffic flows, particularly at peak times, necessitating its upgrade.

"New concrete lined drains and subsoil drains will aid in the preservation of the pavement structure and add to the safety of the road user."

"The project will improve the structural and functional condition of the road by means of strengthening the pavement structure and providing a new asphalt overlay.

Vadi further explained that the toll-free freeway offers an alternative route to the motorists travelling to the Sandton CBD, Lanseria Airport and Diepsloot.

The project is expected to provide a platform for skills development opportunities, training, and economic empowerment to local contractors.

In addition, Dalry Bypass has been designed to separate local from strategic traffic in order to improve safety for both rural road users and communities.
