Stadler Premieres World’s First Narrow Gauge HMU at InnoTrans 2026
Preceded by the sounds of Queen’s ‘A Kind of Magic’ and, obviously, the Mission Impossible theme tune; Stadler has premiered the world’s-first narrow gauge hydrogen multiple unit (HMU) at InnoTrans 2026.

The emission-free train utilises a fuel cell drive, and comes equipped with a high power, high-capacity traction lithium battery for reliable operation.
With fully redundant traction chains utilising water-cooled traction converters and asynchronous traction motors; the train aims to offer both comfort and safety for up to 170 onboard passengers, and has a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h.
Initially, the train will be deployed by a set of three operators: Azienda Trasporti Regionali della Sardegna (ARST), Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC), and Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE), with the unit displayed at InnoTrans bearing ARST livery.
Each train HMU has been specifically designed for the region it will operate in, and is powered entirely by green hydrogen.
