Stadler to Open Central Asia’s First Aluminium Railcar Body Production Site
Stadler has announced it will be expanding its production site in Astana with investments of more than 14 billion KZT (around 25 million CHF) into the construction of aluminium car body welding and painting workshops.

Once completed, the highly automated facility in Central Asia will become the first to be dedicated solely to the production of aluminium rail vehicle bodies.
As part of the preparations for the launch of the new workshops; Stadler Kazakhstan has begun carrying out a phased recruitment programme, as well as extensive training for local specialists in aluminium welding and painting technologies at its facilities across Europe.
Previously, under the company’s localisation programme, Kazakh employees were given training in Switzerland and Poland during the assembly of railway bogies, electrical cabinets, and underfloor equipment.
The launch of the new workshops will aim to increase the localisation level of the enterprise as a whole; expand the range of products manufactured for Kazakhstan and export projects; create new jobs; and integrate Kazakhstan into Stadler’s global supply chain.
Stadler Kazakhstan’s production site has already localised key technological operations, including steel car body welding and painting, electrical equipment manufacturing, underfloor equipment production, bogie manufacturing, installation of pneumatic and electrical systems, as well as the assembly and commissioning of all types of railcars.
Currently, the company employs over 650 people, with the new workshops also set to create approximately 100 additional jobs.
In November 2025, during the fifth meeting of the Kazakhstan-Switzerland Business Council, an agreement was signed with the Ministry of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan on the further development of Stadler’s railway manufacturing operations in Kazakhstan, with Stadler Group’s total investment in Kazakhstan between 2023 and 2031 set to amount to at least 29.5 billion KZT (around 53 million CHF).
