Alstom has marked a major milestone for Melbourne’s tram network with the opening of its new Maidstone tram depot, as well as the arrival of the first set of G Class Trams manufactured at the company’s Dandenong site.

The new vehicles will join the city’s existing fleet – 75% of which have been built by Alstom at its facility in Dandenong.

Pascal Dupond, Alstom Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, said:

Today is about more than opening a facility — it’s about supporting the future of Melbourne’s tram network. Maidstone is a state‑of‑the‑art depot that will keep the G Class fleet running safely and reliably for the next 15 years.

Built in Dandenong by our skilled local team, these trams combine Alstom’s global technology with Victorian know‑how to deliver accessible, energy‑efficient journeys for passengers.

The newly built trams feature a low-floor design, mobility spaces, priority seating, hearing loops and real-time passenger information displays.

Each tram has been manufactured with a minimum of 65% local content, with the project supporting up to 1,900 jobs across manufacturing, construction and the associated supply chain.

Expected to support more than 40 full-time Alstom employees; Maidstone’s new tram depot has been fully equipped with a Depot protection & personnel safety (DDPS) system, digital monitoring tools and an energy-efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
