Alstom has been selected by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to supply rolling stock, signalling solutions and maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4.

The agreement covers 234 Metropolis metro cars, equivalent to 39 six-car trainsets, alongside a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system and five years of maintenance.

L&T was awarded the Integrated Systems Package for the line by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This contract includes rolling stock, CBTC signalling, telecommunications, platform screen doors, depot equipment and five years of associated maintenance. L&T has partnered with Alstom to provide the trains and signalling.

The 39 driverless trainsets will be designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bangalore, Karnataka, and built at its factory in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Propulsion equipment will be produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, while bogies will be supplied from Savli, Gujarat. The Sri City site has previously delivered metro trainsets for projects in India and overseas, including driverless trains for Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Montreal and Sydney.

The Metropolis trains for Line 4 will include accessibility features such as wheelchair spaces and bike racks, as well as systems for passenger comfort, including interior cooling. Safety and performance measures include electrical braking and cybersecurity protections.

Alstom will also deploy its Urbalis CBTC system, which allows driverless operation at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4). The system will be managed from a new Operations Control Centre at Mandale depot and a Backup Control Centre at Mogharpada. The technology will enable automatic train control, managing the headway and safety of the 39 trainsets.

The signalling is expected to help reduce journey times, improve service frequency and contribute to lowering road congestion and emissions by encouraging greater use of public transport.

In addition, Alstom will provide five years of maintenance under its FlexCare Perform programme, covering both the rolling stock and signalling. The company will be responsible for ensuring availability and reliability of the fleet and systems throughout the initial years of operation.

Ling Fang, Region President, APAC, Alstom said:

We are honoured to be chosen for the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, further strengthening our long-standing association with the city of Mumbai. Alstom-built trains and signalling solutions are already serving on other Mumbai Metro lines. This ambitious new project presents more opportunities for us to provide best-in-class solutions to the commuters and contribute to elevating the financial capital’s infrastructure.

Line 4, also referred to as the Green Line, will run for 35.3 km between Wadala in central Mumbai and Kasarvadavali in Thane. The elevated route will have 32 stations and connect with the Eastern Express Highway, Mumbai Monorail and other metro lines.

Alstom is already involved in several parts of Mumbai’s metro system, having previously supplied trains and signalling for the Aqua Line, which is in service, as well as signalling for Lines 2, 7, 7A and 9.
