Stockholm Transport (SL) has ordered ten additional electric multiple units (EMUs) from Stadler.

The new units are valued at 94 million CHF, and will serve to complement SL’s existing fleet on the Roslagsbanan line, replacing a number of 30-year old legacy trains currently in operation.

With a track gauge of 891 millimetres; the 65km Roslagsbanan railway line in Sweden connects the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm to the capital, with Stadler being chosen to provide units due to their operation on the line since 2021.

Annika Bergström, Head of Projects for Development of Roslagsbanan, said:

Our modern X15p trains from Stadler have increased comfort for our passengers and enabled better service. With this follow-up order, we are reaffirming our commitment to provide reliable, comfortable, and sustainable public transport for the Stockholm region.

The new, barrier-free vehicles will have a capacity of up to 150 seats and carry around 300 passengers, with delivery planned to take place in stages starting in 2027 and operation scheduled to begin in 2028.

The new contract includes an option for up to 31 additional vehicles, and will see the trains be manufactured in Bussnang, Thurgau.

Christian König, Deputy Head of Marketing and Sales at Stadler, said:

We are very pleased with the continued trust that SL place in us. This order confirms our expertise in delivering tailor-made solutions under demanding conditions. Scandinavia is a strategically important market for us – we are proud to further expand our presence there.
