Belgium’s national rail operator, SNCB/ NMBS (National Belgian Railways), has confirmed Spanish manufacturer CAF as its preferred bidder for the development, production, and delivery of a new fleet of AM30 trains.
The decision follows a resolution by Belgium’s Council of State and has been approved by SNCB’s Board of Directors. The confirmation allows the procurement process to move forward with CAF, with the intention of finalising a framework agreement.
The proposed agreement includes a maximum supply capacity equivalent to 170,000 passenger spaces. The initial commitment covers trains providing 54,000 spaces, representing a base investment of 1.695 billion EUR.
Should the full scope of the framework be exercised, additional orders could follow under the same agreement structure.
The AM30 trains are part of SNCB’s strategy to modernise its rolling stock and expand capacity to meet future passenger demand.
