From 1-3 August, Alstom is opening the doors to its Derby Litchurch Lane rolling stock factory to display both historic and modern trains at the Greatest Gathering.
The event is part of the Railway 200 celebrations, marking 200 years of Britain’s modern railway. Included on display is the GWR King Class No. 6023 King Edward II steam locomotive, built in 1930 at GWR’s Swindon Works.
The locomotive was provided for the event courtesy of the Great Western Society. During service, it was used to pull express passenger trains between Devon and London Paddington.
The vehicle was initially withdrawn from service in 1962. but was saved and later used for weight testing a new bridge near Bristol.
It has undergone extensive restoration by the Great Western Society and is now part of a static collection at the Didcot Railway Centre.
