MOL partners with JAMSTEC on marine plastic survey

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) announced its participation in a survey concerning marine plastic pollution, hosted by the Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

The plan is that JAMSTEC will collect plastics in the water during the 2019-2020 Japan-Palau Goodwill Yacht Race, which will take place as part of the 25th anniversary of Palau's independence and 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between Japan Palau.

Then, JAMSTEC will analyse the results of the survey and continue to scientific achievements.

The beginning of the survey will commence on December 29, when the racing yachts and accompanying ships will leave Yokohama sailing towards Palau. The results of the survey on the plastic collection will be reported promptly such as during the post-race awards ceremony.

Marine debris is a fatal challenge for the marine environment, which is increasing at an unprecedented rate. According to a recent study, the increase in large plastic pollution has been happening since 1957, with a significant increase since the 1990s. In addition, UN Secretary General, António Guterres recently stated that plastic waste will surpass fish living in the seas.

In light of the marine debris, MOL is committed to global environmental sustainability; That's why, the company announced that it will provide financial support on the survey, additionally to cooperating in JAMSTEC activities to increase understanding of marine environment and measures for the conservation.
