Top five: Which country has the world’s longest railway network?

TIN news: Our list guides us through which countries from around the world have the largest operating rail networks. We have also broken down the ways in which they use their network to reinforce why the expansion is so important.
5. Canada – 48,000 km

The two major freight rail networks in Canada are Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), and Via Rail operates the 12, 500 km intercity passenger rail service. In addition to these three major networks, there is also smaller railways such as Algoma Central, and Northland.
4. India – 65, 000 km

State owned, Indian Railways, operates and owns the rail network in India. The network has become a vitally important piece of infrastructure in India, carrying eight billion passengers, and 10.1 million tonnes of freight in 2013.
3. Russia – 85, 500 km

The whole rail network of Russia is operated by state-owned monopoly Russian Railways (RZD). In 2013, the network had carried 1.08 billion passengers and 1.2 billion tonnes of freight.

The state-owned China Railway Corporation operates the entire network, which carries 2.08 billion passengers, and 3.22 billion tonnes of freight in 2013.

The United States of America has the biggest rail network in the world. Eighty per cent of the American rail network is made up of freight, whilst total passenger network makes up 35,000 km.
