Port of Rotterdam Authority is extremely unhappy with European Commission ruling
|
TIN news:   The European Commission has just announced that as of 1 January 2017, the Netherlands’ sea ports will no longer be exempt from paying corporate tax.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is extremely unhappy with this EC ruling. At present, ports in neighbouring countries enjoy all kinds of support from their respective governments that the port of Rotterdam has to do without. And it is unlikely this situation will change in the years ahead. Should the Port Authority become subject to corporate taxation, this will put further pressure on Rotterdam’s competitive position. While the Port of Rotterdam Authority is not opposed to the payment of corporate tax as such, it believes that the ports sector in Europe should have a truly level playing field.
For this reason, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is presently considering appealing the European Commission’s ruling. In addition, the Port Authority continues to insist on transparency in the movement of funds between governments and local port authorities, and on uniform regulations for all EU ports.
