Victorian government to build Melbournes metro rail tunnel under Swanston St

TIN news: Australia's Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan and Victoria premier Daniel Andrews have revealed plans to go ahead with the construction of Melbourne's metro rail tunnel underneath Swanston St.
The preferred alignment and depth of proposed multibillion-dollar metro rail tunnels that will run through the Melbourne CBD has also been announced.
Andrews said: "Aligning Melbourne Metro with Swanston St is better for passengers and for taxpayers."
"Aligning Melbourne Metro with Swanston St is better for passengers and for taxpayers."
"Confirming the preferred alignment and not proceeding with the Liberals' East West Link means we can get on with the project our state needs and the project our state voted for: Melbourne Metro Rail."
The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority has carried out planning and technical work to decide the most appropriate route and depth for the 9km twin-tunnels. The metro authority was established with $40m in funding from the Labor government.
The work revealed that the proposed Russell St alignment wouldn't allow passengers to transfer directly between the City Loop and the new tunnels.
In addition, the assessment of a proposed Elizabeth St alignment showed unstable ground conditions and significant and costly engineering challenges.
This new development will allow more detailed investigations in the ongoing planning and development of the project. Besides this, it will also permit the authority to carry out detailed consultation with stakeholders.
This project will see the construction of five new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain. Melbourne Metro will create 3,500 jobs during peak construction.
