Air Canada plane crash lands at Halifax airport, injures ۲۳
TIN news: A week after a Germanwings plane crashed into the French Alps, an Air Canada jet crash landed in heavy snow at Canada's Halifax international airport.
Around 23 people were reported to be injured in the incident. The plane had a total of 133 passengers and five crew members.
The flight was heading from Toronto to Halifax and crash landed after it hit an antenna which also led to a mass power outage at the airport.
"At approximately 12:30 local time, early this morning, the aircraft touched down approximately 1,100 feet prior to the end of the runway."
The Global News quoted Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigator Michael Cunningham as saying that the plane crashed after hitting the antenna array, which broke off the main landing gear, leading the plane to skid for 1,100 feet after hitting the runway.
Cunningham said: "At approximately 12:30 local time, early this morning, the aircraft touched down approximately 1,100 feet prior to the end of the runway. At that point it hit an antenna array... this caused considerable damage to the aircraft and the main landing gear came off at that point."
The impact caused detatchment of the plane's nose and an engine and also severely damaged a wing.
TSB investigators have recovered the black box flight recorders for analysis of cockpit exchanges with air traffic control and flight data.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
