Vietnam Airlines expresses interest in purchasing Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport terminal

TIN news:        Vietnamese national carrier Vietnam Airlines has expressed interest in buying the operating rights for the domestic terminal of Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport.

The airline announced its proposal a week after the Vietnamese ministry of transport said that the country was considering transferring the operating rights of one of the two terminals of the airport to a local private carrier.

The terminal T1 measuring 115,000m2 has the capacity of serving nine million passengers annually and features 19 boarding gates, according to Dau Tu (Investment), a newspaper under the ministry of investment and planning.

The domestic terminal currently serves flights operated by VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific.

Vietnam Airlines' offer came three weeks after VietJet Air made a similar one where the latter wanted the rights to use Terminal T1 for 20 years.

However, the Vietnam Airlines offer is different from VietJet's as it wants to purchase the terminal as opposed to lease or rent.

The terminal which comprises two buildings was built in 2001 and is equipped to handle six million passengers annually. However, in 2013, the two buildings together served around 12 million passengers. A new building was added to the terminal in 2013.

VnExpress quoted sources from Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air as saying that they expected the deals to allow them to operate with more flexibility.

Tuoi Tre News quoted sources from Vietnam Airlines as saying that it would use its own capital for the purchase along with help from its subsidiaries as well as outside organisations and individuals.
