TIN news:   Rolls-Royce has signed a framework agreement with Polish rail vehicle manufacturer Pesa to deliver up to 940 MTU PowerPacks underfloor drive units, which will be used in power Link railcars operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB).

Under the agreement that will run until 2021, Rolls-Royce will deliver PowerPacks that include MTU's Series 1600 or 1800 engines.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems chief sales officer Dr Michael Haidinger said: "This framework agreement is the largest single contract concluded to date for our PowerPacks and yet another milestone in the success story of this innovative and cost-effective MTU drive solution."
"This framework agreement is the largest single contract concluded to date for our PowerPacks."

The DB rail cars will come as one, two or three-car train set and the one-car and three-car configurations will be powered by one or two PowerPacks respectively based on the Series 1600 engine.

These drive solutions will be supported by MTU's 12V 1600 R70 engine with a power rating of 565kW.

However, the two-car train configurations will be equipped with two PowerPacks based on the 6H 1800 R85L engine, with a power rating of 390kW.

The PowerPacks also include the components needed to drive the vehicle, in addition to supply power to auxiliary systems, engine and power transmission.

Under an agreement signed in 2012, DB is responsible to compete for tenders with the Pesa Link railcar.

In addition, MTU also provides its 16V 4000 R84 engines for Pesa's Gama locomotive and drive systems for other vehicle classes, including drive units both for new vehicles and for repowering older vehicles.
