Dubai National Air Travel Agency (dnata) is launching a joint venture with Silk Way Group to create a major aviation services hub at the new Alat International Airport in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The new partnership will establish ground handling and cargo operations at the airport, which is expected to open in April 2027.
Once operational, Alat International Airport’s logistics facilities will be capable of handling more than 400,000 metric tons of cargo annually, with projected growth of around 5% per year over the next decade.
Dnata CEO Steve Allen said Baku’s new airport will be a “critical hub” for cargo flows in the region.
“Our investment ensures that airlines and logistics partners have access to safe, quality, and reliable services from day one,” Allen said. “Beyond operational excellence, this venture reflects our long-term strategy to provide integrated aviation solutions in high-potential markets.”
Silk Way Group president Zaur Akhundov said, “This joint venture represents not only an investment in infrastructure but also in people; creating new jobs, developing professional skills, and building a foundation for sustainable growth.”
Located within the Alat Free Economic Zone, the airport will feature 18 aircraft stands, a 4,000 m (2.5 mi.) runway and an air traffic control center.
The project is also expected to create more than 1,000 local jobs and include training initiatives to develop aviation skills in Azerbaijan.
Established in 1959, dnata offers ground handling, cargo, travel, catering and retail services in more than 30 countries across six continents. In fiscal 2024-25, the company handled over 794,000 aircraft turns, moved 3.1 million metric tons of cargo, uplifted 114 million meals and recorded a total transaction value of travel services of $2.6 billion.
